On Sunday May the 3rd 2009 NedaLibya organised its second field day: the Joint HZPC & Dacom Field Day. Aim of the meeting was to provide agricultural breeders, producers, businesses, students and all those with an interest in agriculture & technology with the latest information about the products and services of HZPC and Dacom. The venue took place at the NedaLibya trial field at the farm of Mr. Ahmed Al Amari in Garabuli.
After a warm welcome by Ghait El Bashaa, the day was officially opened by Dr. Mohammed Hosni of the Agricultural Media Workshop, who stressed the current opportunities for new agricultural technologies and products on the Libyan market.
The first speaker of the day Mr. Fauzi Bisheya of the Agricultural Research Centre tackled the topic of potato diseases, a topic closely linked to the subjects of HZPC and Dacom. In his lecture Mr. Bisheya gave an overview of the local potato pests, and gave advice on how to avoid and treat these.
Subsequently the floor was given to Mr. Jan Prins, Area Manager of HZPC. After a brief introduction of HZPC and it’s organisation in market segments, Mr. Prins gave an account of last year’s potato season and highlighted a few particular HZPC-topics, such as the introduction of new varieties.
Mr. Jan Prins was followed by our second main speaker of the day, Mr. Jan Hadders, President of Dacom. Dacom has many years of experience in the international market, including in countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia. However, as Dacom is a new entrant on the Libyan market, Mr. Hadders took the time to extensively introduce the Agri Yield Management System that is particular to Dacom, and which can save farmers time & money and has a beneficial effect on the environment. At the conclusion of his speech, Mr. Hadders invited NedaLibya to sign the dealer agreement for the Libyan market.
After this, Mr. Mark Ellwood of Yara, Business Manager of Yara UK Limited, talked about the importance of using fertilizer, the right fertilizer, in the right doses and at the right time. By doing so, farmers can avoid defects in potatoes, that are sometimes wrongly attributed to diseases and pests.
And last but not least, Mr. Ahmed Murad Ghanuni of the Pesticides Research Centre, spoke about the importance of responsible use of pesticides. Great care should be taken in administering these, especially if the treated products are to be sold shortly on the market.
After the theoretical part of the day, all visitors were invited for a tour of the field. Here they could have a closer look at the ten new varieties that were planted on this year’s trial field. HZPC’s specialists, Mr. Jan Prins, Mr. Rian Stekelenburg and Mr. Jaap Mazee were present with their hands-on knowledge to answer any questions about these varieties as well as potato planting in general. At the same time visitors were invited to have a look at the installation of the Dacom system, were Mr. Jan Hadders and Mr. Alfred Rol, key account manager of Dacom, demonstrated how the system is used.
Before closing the field day, a tombola was held, after which the visitors were invited for a tasteful meal at the house of Ahmed Al Amari, this year’s host of the field day.
